A few minutes of checks before a long drive can save you a breakdown, and some of them are a legal requirement.
Check pressures when the tyres are cold, before you set off. The correct figures are in your handbook or on the sticker inside the fuel flap or door frame. Don't forget the spare, and use the higher setting if you're carrying a full load.
Park on level ground with the engine off and give it a few minutes to settle. Pull out the dipstick, wipe it, push it fully back in and pull it out again. The oil should sit between the min and max marks. Top up with the oil your handbook recommends, a little at a time, and don't overfill.
The UK legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, all the way around the tyre. For a quick guide, use the 20p test: put a 20p coin into the main grooves. If you can see the outer band of the coin, the tread may be too low, so have it checked by a tyre fitter.
Keep your windows, mirrors, lights and number plates clean so you can see and be seen. The law requires your number plates and lights to be visible, and a dirty or unreadable plate can lead to a fine. Check all your lights work, and top up the screenwash.
